Three of us headed down to the Blue’s Can on Friday night. I remembered being so impressed by the eclectic repertoire of Carlos del Junco and the Blues Mongrels the first time I saw them perform. I remember leaving the venue with the feeling that I had experienced something very unique in music. No one has more commitment to his performance and you can literally feel his soul reaching out to the crowd. The Blues Mongrels included Eric St. Laurent on guitar and Henry Heillig on bass…exceptional musicians!
I was talking to the sound guy, Mario, when I turned around and found him standing at my elbow. So, I shook his hand and we shared a short conversation about the show I had seen him perform at the Red Onion in south Calgary some years back. What a pleasure to meet Carlos del Junco.
The evening of music began with Jay Coda Walker. Wowsah! Where has this guy been hiding OR where have I been? Such a sound! He played a fantastic set and later ended up sipping a beer with us while listening to Mr. del Junco. I’ve been listening to the Jay Walker CD in the van, while driving, ever since Friday night.
The entire evening was a fun time…good food and conversation and great music. It can’t get much better than that.
This is really fine. I like the music. Are you familiar with Toots Thielman?
