Stout Hearted Men by Sigmund Romberg

…from the Musical Romance, ‘The New Moon’

Book and lyrics by Frank Mandel and Oscar Hammerstein II

I’m having so much fun finding some of these tunes on Youtube.  I really enjoy the small four minute clip above. I wish I could have heard Dad sing these pieces.  With this one, I am wondering if he sang this one in the context of a musical or if it is another festival piece.  I’ll find out in the morning.

“Thanks Kath–Yes I sang this song many times though my favorite time was with the Moose Jaw Tech High School choir under the direction of Mrs Alice Weir. With them I remember doing the first 8 or 9 lines “You who have dreams….”. solo then our fantastic choir singing all the parts on the rest. It’s one more that I can still sing today without the music. Thanks again for the memories.”

I actually really like it as a men’s chorus…this is one of the many I found on line and really like it.

You have dreams if you act
They will come true
Would you turn your dreams to a fact
It’ s up to you
If you have the soul and the spirit
Never fear it you’ll see it through
Hearts can inspire other hearts with their fire
For the strong obey
When a strong man shows them the way
Give me some men
Who are stout-hearted men
Who will fight for the right they adore
Start me with ten
Who are stout-hearted men
And I’ll soon give you ten thousand more
Shoulder to shoulder
And bolder and bolder
They grow as they go to the fore
Then there’s nothing in the world
Can stall or halt plan
When stout-hearted men
Can stick together man to man
When stout-hearted men
Can stick together man to man…

SIGMUND ROMBERG, Oscar HAMMERSTEIN II

On page 433 of his book, Routledge Handbook of Political Management, Dennis W. Johnson uses the lyric as an exemplar of what it means to be Grass Roots in any organization.
