Curriculum Vitae

On February 26, 2002, I wrote in a journal…

“God sustains me…and God is the Creator…I create…art sustains me.  Art lifts me up so that in some strange way, I can see myself more clearly.  When I believe that there is absolutely no way I can pick myself up again, no way that I can be strong, I pick up a paint brush instead.  So many times this brush has made me turn tears, to celebration.  I am grateful for the rough pull of canvas on my knuckles, for the smell of paint, for colour that moves me to a higher place.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote…

“Art should exhilarate, and throw down the walls of circumstance on every side, awakening in the beholder the same sense of universal relation and power which the work evinced in the artist, and its highest effect is to make new artists.”

Guillaume Apollinaire wrote…

“Without poets, without artists, men would soon weary of nature’s monotony.  The sublime idea men have of the universe would collapse with dizzying speed. The order which we find in nature, and which is only an effect of art, would at once vanish.  Everything would break up in chaos.  There would be no seasons, no civilization, no thought, no humanity; even life would give away and the impotent void would reign everywhere.”

Gustave Flaubert wrote…

“The artist must be in his work as God is in creation, invisible and all-powerful; one must sense him everywhere but never see him.”

Quintilian is said to have written,

“The perfection of art is to conceal art.”

John Updike wrote…

“What art offers is space – a certain breathing room for the spirit.”

Robert Browning wrote…

“It is the glory and good of Art that Art remains the one way possible of speaking the truth, to mouths like mine at least.”

Schumann writes…

“To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts – such is the duty of the artist.”
