Great Uncle Henry Pius (Pyouche) Gallant 1921-1987

When people say, regarding relationships, “It’s complicated,”  they really don’t know how complicated it can be!  Go on back in time and it takes tremendous detective work to solve some individual trees.  One of those trees belongs to my Great Uncle Pyouche (sounded out as Pie-oosh).  Henry is located in the far right of the Gallant boys.

Henry does not appear on the 1921 Canada census, with his family, because it was the year of his birth.  If anyone knows the circumstances of his marriages and relationships or his work life, please contact me.  I’m proud of him for his service in World War II.

Henry Gallant Mamie's Funeral

The above photo is taken from the group photograph taken on the steps of St. Paul’s in Summerside after Mamie’s funeral in January 1964.  Naveta Florence Kinch, daughter or George and Gladys (Barnett) Kinch and Henry can be seen here.  After her marriage to Henry, she married George Chappell.

They shared three children; Earl J., Wayne and Monica.  Wayne passed away at a very young age.  Neveta passed away just days before my Great Uncle Earl, on January 19, 2015.  May she rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon her.

Chappell– The death occurred at the Wedgewood Manor, Summerside, on Monday, January 19, 2015, of Naveta Chappell, of Summerside, aged 81 years.  Born in Alberton, she was the daughter of the late George and Gladys (Barnett) Kinch.  Survived by her children Earl (Debbie) Gallant and Monica Donovan (James Schurman); step-children Barry (Gail), Bryan (Marie); grandchildren: Deanna, Shannon, Jamie, Earl, Jimmy and Karrie; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Barry (Nora), Boyd,  Jack (Maureen); sisters Margaret Jeffery, Betty (Clarence) Arsenault, Pearl  Leveque, Wilma (Gerald) Beamish, Roma Matthew, May Kinch and Linda (Keith) Taylor. Predeceased by her first husband Henry Gallant and second husband George Chappell; son Wayne Gallant; brothers George, Blair and Doug Kinch; sisters Faye Ellis, Georgie Thomas, and Susan Kinch. Resting at the Moase Funeral Home, Summerside for visiting hours on Saturday from 2 – 4 p.m. only.  No funeral service by personal request. Interment later in Peoples Cemetery, Summerside. Memorial donations to Hospice Palliative Care PEI would be appreciated.

Henry Gallant passed at the age of 66, in 1987.  Because I can’t find any information on marriages and relationships in my research, I’m not clear on when he would have connected with Margaret (Peggy) Powers.

Henry’s son, Earl, passed away just last year in 2018.  I wish that we had met one another.

I found this little piece in the Summerside Guardian archives today….spoke to Gladys about it and she said she couldn’t confirm it by memory, but that the story wouldn’t surprise her.  She said that you couldn’t keep Henry still…he roller skated all over on the roads in his free time and he was always off and running.  I’m posting this little recollection of kindness and good-heartedness…

Peggy had previously married James Arsenault who was nicknamed Joey Dolphy.  Together, they had a son, Jimmy (Dolphy) Arsenault.  James likely received his nickname because his father’s name was Adolphous Arsenault.  Peggy was born in Rumford, Maine 30 October, 1922, immigrated to Canada in 1942 and died in Summerside, 30 August, 1999.
