These are musicians I’ve been following in Calgary for several years now and it was a wonderful thing to listen last evening to a large selection from the new CD.  I listen to Charlie play on the steel pedal guitar Fridays when I visit the Ironwood…and of course, Tom Phillips who is the chief troubadour for The Men of Constant Sorrow.  Kit Johnson is an amazing companion to his upright base.  Stewart MacDougall made a trip down from Edmonton to tinkle the keys…a wonderful writer.  Tim Williams has participated in amazing projects in the city…one of them was directing the Joni Mitchell piece that was here in Calgary a couple of years ago…and he can often be heard playing at the Shamrock.  Tim Leacock is eclectic and does a wonderful ‘thing’ with the mandolin.

The stage was cleared at one point…soft light cast onto the warm wood of all of the instruments…and Billy Cowsill’s voice came across on the sound system.  The huge crowd came to a hush…many wept…as we listened to a final song.  It was a wonderful tribute to a great musician.
